Movie: Art & Copy - Inside Advertising’s Creative Revolution
~ $15.00
I Want My MTV. Think Small. Just Do It. Got Milk?
Where do these phrases come from? Art & Copy: Inside Advertising’s Creative Revolution introduces the cultural visionaries who revolutionized advertising during the industry’s golden age in the 1960s by creating slogans to live by and ads we all remember.
From the introduction of the Volkswagen to America to the triumph of Apple Computers, ART & COPY explores the most successful and influential advertising campaigns of the 20th century, and the creative minds that launched them.
Movie: Helvetica
~ $20.00
Any serious designer needs to see this film- better yet, they should own it.
Helvetica is a feature-length independent film about typography, graphic design and global visual culture. It looks at the proliferation of one typeface (which celebrated its 50th birthday in 2007) as part of a larger conversation about the way type affects our lives.
The film is an exploration of urban spaces in major cities and the type that inhabits them, and a fluid discussion with renowned designers about their work, the creative process, and the choices and aesthetics behind their use of type.
Moleskine Notebooks

Moleskine notebooks are great for several reasons, but most of all because they come in so many different types and styles, there’s one (or more likely, several) to meet the needs of every designer out there.
My personal favorites:
Moleskine Squared Notebook Soft Cover Pocket (Great for quick sketching and notes on the go)
Moleskine Plain Notebook Soft Cover XLarge (Great for notes and drawing)
Moleskine 2012 12 Month Weekly Notebook Black Soft Cover Pocket (been using this for 4 years now)
Moleskine Ruled Cahier Journal X-Large, Blue, Set of 3 (Cheap, great for journaling, planning, and sketching)
Pantone Boxes
~ $20.00
These are one of my favorite gifts. Let’s face it, designers have a lot of trinkets (or tools, as wel like to call them) that create clutter. But most of us think better with less clutter. The solution: the stylish Pantone box. Your favorite designer can throw all of her markers, notepads, powerbars, batteries, etc in the box, and they’re hidden from view but readily available.
While you’re at it, I recommend getting one for yourself, they really are great.
Book: “Sagmeister: Made You Look”
~ $28.00
Just as film, art, music, and literature have the power to move people, Stefan Sagmeister’s innovative work shows that graphic design, too, can cut to the emotional quick.
Stefan Sagmeister is one of the best-known designers and this book, covers 20 years of his graphic design. With Sagmeister’s own writing, the book features images from the studio archive, as well as specific influences and reference points for his projects and ideas. Fully illustrated with a red PVC slipcase and silver-gilded pages, this monograph is a compilation of practically all the work Sagmeister and his studio ever designed up to 2001, even the bad stuff, and is the perfect gift for both new and seasoned designers.
Trust me, any designer who doesn’t already own this book wishes they did.
